I'm having a little fame rush right now. I was recently interviewed in front of an audience by Ben Carter for his Tales of a Red Clay Rambler podcast, and it was posted yesterday. You can listen to it right here. The conversation centers around writing on a blog, using social media as an artist, burnout, and what it means to share your world with customers and fans. I get a little tongue-tied sometimes, that's why I like writing so much. I listened to myself talk and I only winced a couple of times. I'm like most people-- I hate the sound of my recorded voice, but somehow the voice I heard didn't sound like my voice so I was okay with it. I have a moratorium on self-hate right now and listening to yourself talk for an hour without wanting to punch your own self in the face is a pretty good test.
Listening to the interview I had a few moments of wishing I had elaborated on a few things or shared some more thoughts. It was like listening to an interview where you are thinking, "Ask this question! What about that, ask about that!" Only I was thinking, "Answer this! Why didn't you talk about that?!"
I'm going to listen to the interview again and take some notes on things that I want to elaborate on, and I will write a post about it, or maybe a few if I need to. If you listened to the interview and you have some follow-up questions or something you want me to talk more about, please feel free to post here or send me an email. I said in the interview, and I will say it again here, that part of my mission is to share as much information as possible about running a pottery business, making a living as an artist, and all the challenges that go with that. I want to be a resource of support and information, so send me your questions or share your thoughts.

Haven't listened to it yet, but I will. I do have a question for you though. Do you have any of your items in art galleries, or done a curated or solo exhibit? If you have, what is the process?
ReplyDeleteHi Shawna, I do not generally sell to art galleries
Deletewhich usually take work on consignment, but I do sell to stores and boutiques. I don't put work out on consignment unless it's for a friend or a store I am so excited about (rare). I've been in curated exhibits, that's usually a matter of just getting an invite or keeping your eyes open for opportunities and applying. I don't spend much time doing those either... too busy just selling to my won customers!
I truly enjoyed listening to your pod cast. It was very informative and you shared valuable information. Thank you for being open and sharing your knowledge!
ReplyDeleteI am a high school ceramics teacher and artist. My goal is to take that jump in becoming a full time artist. Can you give me advice on taking that next step? I have sold work regionally and locally and struggle with what to do next? My degrees are in Painting/Drawing a BFA & MFA, Painting & drawing is background and I will always love 2-dimensional work but there is something wonderful about working with clay. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions from you. Thanks Margaret
Hi Margaret, that is a BIG question and I will have to write a post to answer, I think it's too big for this little comment area. Stay tuned!
DeleteHi Whitney! I listened to the first half of your interview on the way home yesterday and I'm excited for the second half this morning!
ReplyDeleteI'm curious to learn how artists balance studio life and personal life - how do you give sufficient time to both? So often I allow the studio to take priority and my loved ones suffer...
Thank you! You're a brilliant inspiration, thank you for sharing.
Katy.
Hi Kathryn, great question! I've definitely learned the hard way with that and I am still refining my approach and making course corrections. I think I will try to answer that in a post-- again, too much information for this format. Stay tuned!
DeleteI really enjoyed listening to your podcast. I found it informative and interesting. Great to put a voice to the words you write here... even if you don't think it sounds like you :-). Bravo!
ReplyDeleteThank you Michèle, I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
